What
are Some of the Agency's Activities?
Ombudsman
The AAA provides nursing home ombudsman
services through a contracted region-wide Ombudsman, AAA staff, and
volunteers who serve as advocates for nursing home residents, working
as liaisons between nursing home residents, their families, the homes'
staff/administrators and local regulatory agencies. The ombudsmen provide
companionship, friendship, and informal counseling to the elderly and
bring concern, commitment and problem-solvers. The region-wide Ombudsman
also coordinates a volunteer group called the Blue Angels who visit
nursing home residents on a regular basis. To become a volunteer, please
email Diana DeLeon.
Legislation
The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature is supported
by the AAA through a steering committee that oversees the candidates'
campaigns and canvasses the ballots. Created in 1985, the Texas Silver-Haired
Legislature is a representative, non partisan body of 116 senior citizens
elected from across the state who met biennially in Austin to address
issues and draft proposed legislation of concern to older Texans.
Care
Coordination
The AAA's Care Coordination Program is a direct
service of AAA which provides in-home services such as housekeeping,
personal care, emergency response units, respite care and senior companions
to frail elderly in order to help them remain in their own homes for
as long as possible. For more information, please email Delia
Garcia or Tony Lopez.
Benefits
Counseling

provided by AAA staff and a group of volunteers in the Coastal Bend
who are trained to be knowledgeable about eligibility guidelines for
certain government programs such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI),
Food Stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, QMB, SLMB, QI-1 and QI-2. For more
information, please email Delia Garcia
or Tony Lopez.

training sessions for both service providers and the general public
on topics ranging from Alzheimer's respite caregiving to food sanitation.

National Family
Caregiver Support Program
The Older
Americans Act Amendments of 2000 authorized and appropriated funds for
Title III, Part E, National Family Caregviers Support Program. This
new funding was established to provide multifaceted systems of support
services for family caregivers and for grandparents or other older individuals
who are relative caregivers. In Texas, these funds pass through the
Texas Department on Aging and their local affiliate, the Area Agency
on Aging of the Coastal Bend. For more information, please click
